In his own words

Silent Night

“Silent Night” is a drama based on the factual experiences and perspective of a Fritz Vincken, a boy of 12-years-old, who witnessed a unique act of courage, survivorship and kindness in war-torn Germany in winter 1944.

At the height of the bombing raids of the Battle of the Bulge, little Fritz and his mother were driven deep into the Ardennes Forest to escape the bombing.  Though separated from Fritz’s dad, a baker pressed into field service for the Fuerher, Fritz and his mother, Elisabeth, rode many miles deep into the woods before spying a small, wooden shanty.  Clay floors, thin walls and only berries and nuts to eat, Fritz and his mother did their best to stay safe as the war encroached from all sides. more

Elisabeth Vincken was born in Aachen, Germany in 1900.  She married a Dutchman from the city of Limberg.  Herr Vincken’s father started a bakery in Aachen in 1858, which he passed to his son (Fritz’s father) in 1922.  Herr Vincken remained a baker all his life, even being conscripted into service to bake for Hitler’s soldiers in 1940.

Fritz Vincken was born in 1932, one year before Hitler rose to power in Germany.  First hand, the young boy witnessed Synagogues on fire, the closing of Jewish shops and later on, the freedom trains and safe houses that sprang up from time to time.  Mr. Vincken also witnessed the streets clogged with marching soldiers and air raid upon air raid, until he was almost deaf. more
