SYNOPSIS

In SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL: WINTER’S END, Sarah Witting (Glenn Close) finds herself at the center of a gathering storm – both emotionally and physically.

During 1918, when World War I is raging through Europe and a deadly flu epidemic is ravaging America, the Witting household is thrown into its own turmoil.  Jacob’s (Christopher Walken) father, John (Jack Palance), who walked out on his family when Jacob was a boy, suddenly reappears. Although years have past, Jacob still feels the pain of his father’s abandonment.

John explains to Sarah why he returned home and simply states, “There comes a time when you want to know what happened.” Trying to remain impartial but help the two reconcile their lost relationship, Sarah pleads with Jacob to forgive his father.  Jacob bitterly refuses.

Unfortunately, Jacob and John have a terrible confrontation.  John explains that leaving his family wasn’t a simple case of abandonment—Jacob’s mother sent him away because she despised him as well as their life on the farm. “She told me that you would be better off without me.”  The argument ultimately turns physical causing Jacob to fall and break his leg. In the end, Jacob and John manage to reconcile.  Jacob reveals his fear of his father coming home to die and begs him not to leave him again.  Father and son embrace, after so many years.

It is Sarah, the mail-order bride who came to Kansas to make a difference – and has managed to do so, who helps her family face its greatest challenge.

In this heartwarming tale of triumph over adversity, the Wittings are challenged to forgive the past and embrace the future – together, as a family.
