The Phantom of the Opera The movie opens with a prologue set in 1919 in Paris, where a crowd has gathered in the dusty wreckage of the Opera Populaire for an auction of artifacts and memorabilia from the once glorious building. Two elderly bidders, an old woman (Miranda Richardson) and a well-dressed gentleman (Patrick Wilson) are interested in a papier mache music box in the form of a monkey playing a cymbal. As the auctioneer pulls back the tarp covering the piece de resistance, the fabled, ornate crystal chandelier, we are swept back to 1870 when the chandelier figures prominently in a series of tragic events. more
