In the Oklahoma Territory in 1873, a group of men thinks that Jed Cooper has stolen some cattle and murdered the owner. Despite Cooper’s protests that he is innocent, that he bought the cattle, he is strung up to a tree and left to dangle.
After being hanged and riddled with bullets, Cooper is saved by Rachel, who puts him back together, nursing him back to health. However, since she was raped, she no longer trusts men. She is wary of all men, and she is especially wary of Jed Cooper.
Cooper is tricked into wearing a marshal’s badge by Judge Adam Fenton, who is plainspoken, but shrewd. Nonetheless, Cooper is determined to get his revenge by tracking down all of the men responsible for hanging him. Eventually, there is a large mass hanging from a central platform in the middle of town accompanied by a quasi-religious ritual with scripture reading and hymn singing – all while the town folk watch dressed in their Sunday best.
