BROADCAST SYNOPSIS

Three years ago, a team of astronaut/miners, including Commander William Phillips (Campbell Scott) and Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Quinlan (Daryl Hannah) complete a daring space expedition.  Awoken from hyper-sleep, Commander Phillips finds that his entire crew has disappeared.  As an emergency alarm sounds, Phillips looks out the space station window searching for any signs of life…or death.

Present day, an archeologist, Lloyd Walker (Gil Bellows), is working on a large dig when his assistant is suddenly sucked into the ground by an underground explosion.  Walker is furious when he discovers the city has no plans to look for his assistant and has taken immediate action by cementing the entire area and closing the site without explanation.

While Walker is arguing with a city official, he meets Liz Quinlan, now an employee of the mayor’s office.  She apologizes for the man’s rudeness and encourages him to come to her office if he finds anything of a strange or suspicious nature.

Discovering an area underground, Walker decides to investigate and finds a colony of strange looking and smelling pods.  Once above ground, he lights a match and throws it down the manhole where he was exploring.  An immediate ball of fire is spewed upward, leading Walker to believe the pods contain some sort of gaseous material.

All over the city there are strange and bizarre occurrences.  Family members are going to work and never coming home.  The city is in chaos.  Citizens who go looking for answers to these happenings are directed to Room 86 in City Hall.  When Walker goes to the Mayor’s office and tells Liz what he discovered, she also instructs him to go to Room 86 and offers to make a phone call so he has priority when he gets there.  Once he arrives at Room 86, he meets entomologist Marianne Winters (Suleka Mathew).  Walker soon notices that when someone is called in behind the security door, they never return.

After over-powering the security guard, Walker goes through the door and stumbles upon an underground laboratory of alien insect creatures harvesting human bodies for survival.  Just before he becomes one of their prisoners, Marianne and a small group of civilians locate Walker. They continue to explore the underground laboratory and find Commander Phillips, who has been kept prisoner by the alien insect creatures since his return to Earth.  They have been doing unspeakable experiments on him for the past three years, rendering him mad from lack of human contact.

After freeing Commander Phillips and narrowly escaping the alien underground laboratory, Walker and the others make it back above ground.  Marianne and the others take her truck around the city to try and find some humans who have not been taken over by the aliens.  Walker goes to Liz’s office for some answers, but before he enters the room, he eavesdrops on her and finds out she is the alien insects’ queen, with the city’s highest representatives as her underlings.

Discovering that police and government officials have been taken over by the alien insects masquerading as humans, Walker and the others hijack a city bus and head for the underground colony.  The only way to save the city is to find a way to destroy the huge colony growing underground.

Walker is confronted by Liz who is overseeing “her babies” as they build their hive.  She tells him a virus on the moon cut off their food supply forcing them to come to earth and procure food from other sources.  As Walker lunges at her, she morphs out of her human skin, becomes the queen, and the battle for ultimate survival begins.

As the alien insects’ horrifying harvest threatens to reach end-of-the-world proportions, Commander Phillips confronts the queen, his hand on a high-powered grenade.  He tells her she will not win the battle and tells the others to run for it, as he pulls the pin.
