IN A LAND WHERE ANYBODY CAN BECOME PRESIDENT, ANYBODY JUST DID! ‘DAVE,’ STARRING KEVIN KLINE, SIGOURNEY WEAVER, FRANK LANGELLA AND VING RHAMES IS A HALLMARK CHANNEL PREMIERE NOVEMBER 17
Kevin Kline stars as Dave Kovic, a regular guy with a regular job who has one unique quality: he happens to look exactly like William Harrison Mitchell, the 44th President of the United States. The uproarious “Dave” is a two-hour Hallmark Channel Premiere on Friday, November 17 (9/8c).
Dave Kovic runs a small temporary employment agency in Baltimore. He's not rich, but he gets by; his needs are modest, and he finds pleasure in providing work for the anxious unemployed who show up at his door. Meanwhile, it seems the President of the United States, William Harrison Mitchell, has taken to discreetly employing look-alikes to double for him in public appearances, so that he may use the time for other, non-executive, pursuits. His wily Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander (Frank Langella), Communications Director Alan Reed (Kevin Dunn), and Secret Service operative, Duane (Ving Rhames), learn of Dave Kovic and present him with a "unique opportunity to serve his country," recruiting him as a one-time stand-in for the President following Mitchell's appearance at a nearby hotel.
However, things don't turn out exactly as planned. When President Mitchell is suddenly stricken mortally ill, Dave, at the insistence of the Chief of Staff, finds himself continuing his masquerade as America's Chief Executive...indefinitely. Fascination with the novelty of his situation turns to panic and then to determination, as Dave finds himself caught between the ambitions of a group of powerful people and his own basic ideas of right and wrong.
The challenges he faces are many, including fooling First Lady Ellen Mitchell (Sigourney Weaver)...for a while. But Dave's overnight education in the intricacies of power, deception and intrigue transforms the Presidency in a rapid succession of comic maneuvers that rekindle America's belief in the decency and ingenuity of the common citizen. In a country where anybody can become President - anybody just did!
Producer/director Ivan Reitman, whose previous films have created entire genres of humor with such blockbusters as "National Lampoon's Animal House," "Ghostbusters" and "Twins," directs Academy Award®-winner Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver in a contemporary comedy about an ordinary guy who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances--and triumphs by remaining exactly what he is--an ordinary guy.
"Dave" is produced by Lauren Shuler-Donner and Ivan Reitman; Michael C. Gross and Joe Medjuck are the executive producers. The film is written by Gary Ross. Academy Award®-winner Ben Kingsley plays Vice President Nance and Charles Grodin appears as Dave's accountant friend, Murray.
Top-notch technical contributions are provided by an impressive group of previous Academy Award® nominees, including production designer J. Michael Riva, director of photography Adam Greenberg, editor Sheldon Khan and costume designers Ann Roth and Richard Hornung.
