SYNOPSIS

Bee Bedloe (Blythe Danner, Meet the Parents) and Doug Bedloe (Edward Herrmann, Oz) of Baltimore, Maryland, have three children: Claudia (Glynnis O’Connor, Summer of Fear), Danny (Jeffrey Nordling, Journey to the Center Of the Earth) and Ian (Thomas McCarthy, Mary & Tim). Claudia, the oldest, has started a family of her own. Danny, the “Golden Boy” of the family has fallen in love with Lucy Dean (Mary-Louise Parker, Fried Green Tomatoes), mother of two from a previous marriage. Seventeen-year-old Ian is the baby of the family.

Ian, typically the life of the party, becomes uncharacteristically glum, when Lucy gives birth to Daphne just seven months after she and Danny marry. Ian notices Lucy disappearing whenever Danny is not around. This makes Ian question whether or not his brother is the real father of little Daphne, who was born two months “premature?” Ian confronts Danny with his suspicions and a distraught Danny ends up killing himself in a car crash.  Lucy is devastated and commits suicide.

What’s to happen to the three Bedloe/Dean children, Agatha, Thomas and Daphne? Wracked with guilt, Ian stumbles upon a church—the Church of the Second Chance. Rev. Emmett tells Ian what he doesn’t want to hear, that it is his duty to drop out of college and become caretaker of the three children. When Ian questions the religion, Rev. Emmett calmly explains, “It’s the religion of atonement and complete forgiveness.  It’s the religion of the Second Chance.”

And so begins the real education of Ian Bedloe. After dropping out of college and while trying to find a job, again, he stumbles upon an answer in the person of B.B. Brant, a talented artisan who makes custom furniture. Building hand-carved furniture quickly becomes Ian’s love.

As the children grow, their personalities take shape. Agatha grows into a serious and studious young woman who wants to become a doctor. Thomas, the popular socializer and charmer, is destined to become a computer engineer. Daphne, the youngest, and most outspoken of the crew is also the most free spirited. Somewhat of a mischievous young lady, she tells Ian, “I goof on purpose. I’m not like you—King Careful, Mr. Look-Both-Ways, ‘Saint Maybe.’ Mess up, I say, fall flat on your face.  So what!  Use all the life you’ve got.”

It is clear that in young adulthood, all three kids have made it — although feisty Daphne has had her share of “moments.” But what of Ian? As Agatha says, “I just want him to have a full life.  Time’s ticking away.”

Well, Ian (“Saint Maybe”) eventually does earn a full life as does the entire clan. In a strange twist of fate and out of tragedy, grows life...even love. Saint Maybe is about the power of perseverance, the power of family, the power of love.
